Noah has had a stuffy nose lately…and the mom that I am can’t stand to see dried boogers in his nose. So what do I do, but pick them out. This unfortunately has led to Noah getting his own ‘boogies’ out. “Wowah do it” as he would say, then he wants us to get them off his fingers
.
Last night, around 4am we woke up to Noah at the gate calling us…which is normal for him. (Yes, he still wakes up in the middle of the night) You’d never guess what the problem was. Apparently he had a “big boogie” that he needed out. Eric went to him and he pointed to his nose and said “big boogie”. So Eric proceeded to remove the boogie and Noah went straight back to his room, crawled in bed and went back to sleep
Gotta love the Boogie Man!

So we all know the jokes about needing a vacation after a vacation, but does that ever really change at any point in life? I grew up heading to Colorado with the RV camper in tow full of food and clothes. I’m not sure if it’s something I’ve made up in my head or if I actually do remember us leaving and being gone for two weeks at a time some summers. They were fun times.
Leslie and I have been blessed in a lot of ways – and somehow we’ve ended up with an RV camper of our own (thank God – it is the reason I was able to convince Leslie to let me get my truck!!). We have a hard time getting away with it, but it’s fun once we do.
This year we went to Jellystone park outside of New Braunfels, TX. We spent about a week camping, sight seeing in San Antonio and roasting marshmallows over an open fire every evening. Of course in our 30 year old camper we were not without the most modern of amenities. We have our TV/DVD player, hot showers, stove and even a microwave. So if you’re wondering, no we didn’t rough it.
We got away from the day-to-day, and that’s all we could really ask for! Sure, it’s always a lot of work to plan out the meals and pack all of your clothes, not to mention having to unpack it all when you get home, but the days in between…we were just us…A Family.

| I have been given a message from God, and I think I need to share it with everyone. This revelation has come to me and to me alone! It is God’s word and I know that it’s something that none of you have ever…EVER realized before now. (wink-wink)Are you ready for it? You might want to sit down! OK, here it is…
We are people who require instant satisfaction!
Bet you didn’t see that coming did you? I’m sure that no one has ever said that before. This is as unique a revelation as there has ever been, and I’m the one who gets to let the world know!
|
| Of course I’m kidding (please tell me you knew I was joking). But that doesn’t make it any less true. I’m sure this isn’t the first time someone has made a comment about how we come to expect microwaves to micro-wave faster, internet speeds to be speedier, and our favorite sports team to win right now. Think about it, do you know anyone that actually follows the ‘Oven Baking Instructions’ instead of the microwave instructions for a Hotpocket? |
|
| Do you ever get a call from your internet service provider offering a great deal if you downgrade your service package? And how about that sports team that just hired the new coach everyone was so excited about just a few months ago? A 2-6 start to a season is unacceptable. Right? If this is who we are as a people, what kind of impact does it have on how we act and react to issues of our faith? To be honest, the Christian faith, the Church, and in particular the Presbyterian denomination is not built for a ‘what have you done for me lately’ type of people.
I’ve seen a church with large banners hanging from the roofline that read: “30 Minute Worship.” Huh? Really? Can I supersize that? I guess I just don’t understand why we think we can take an infinite God and place him in a guaranteed 30-minute sized box. I truly believe that the church needs to find ways to meet people where they are and help guide them toward the Church, but there also has to be a balance. If we go out into the world offering instant spiritual gratification we are doing nothing less than setting people up for disappointment and bitterness toward Jesus Christ!
The tagline for the Christian faith is to lead people to eternal life and relationship with the one true God. Has anyone ever found a quick and easy route for that journey? And what about the way we do business as a congregation? Everyone has heard the jokes about committees. If you want something done you have to make a committee to discuss making a committee blah blah blah. It’s funny because it’s true! Sure, we want someone to take it, run with it, and get it done quickly, but that isn’t the way we work because it isn’t best for the community.
The world around us might be fast paced and looking for instant satisfaction in every aspect of life, but as Christians we are called to be patient. Maybe we do bake our Hotpockets in the oven and get to enjoy a crispier and flakier crust. Maybe we downgrade our ISP and save a little money so we can give a little more to Christian Community Assistance. Maybe we give our new coach a few years to install his system of winning. And how about this: we not only accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior right here and now, but we give him our entire lives and allow him to make us who he wants us to be.

A little late i know, but here are some pics from Halloween season at the Varnon house. Noah has become completely obsessed with the color orange lately and completely fell in love with pumpkins so it was only right to dress him up as a pumpkin….that is for as long as he would keep the costume on. Thankfully it velcroed up the back so it was an easy on/off costume. We celebrated Halloween this year by attending a local pumpkin patch…Noah was so ecstatic to see all the pumpkins. The first words out of his mouth when he saw the patch was “PUNKINS!!!” He especially loved the bounce house. Later in the week we has Trunk or Treat at the church. (see prior post for pics and more on that) Neither of us were too thrilled about actually carving a pumpkin so we just let Noah paint on a few and make faces on the others with some poke in pieces (thanks Mamese!!). Noah dressed up for Halloween twice at school and got to ‘trick or treat’ to the church offices and get some candy. Now for the downfall of Halloween…Noah found out what candy is…AARRGG!! We had done so well for 2 years not letting him really know what it was. Of course he had some, but he just knew M&M’s…don’t think he really realized there was so much other sweet stuff out there. We confiscated whatever candy he did get and let him have a piece here and there…unlike Halloween night. We all sat outside and handed out candy to the Trick or Treaters….I do believe Noah’s dinner that night consisted of a few chicken strips and lot and Lots and LOTS of candy! Oh well…might as well let him indulge once in a while, huh?!

Did we over do it? Well, it got us first prize in the “Best of Trunks” competition at the Westminster Presbyterian Church 2008 Fall Festival. We had a lot of fun planning it out! We had small pumpkins to give away and had to fight the kids off with a stick when they started to try to poach our big ones!
The whole idea of the pumpkin patch really came from Noah. He seems to be showing a bit of color-favoritism. If there is anything with the color orange on it he’s going to see it and point it out, if not want it! So, this time of year, pumpkins have become a Noah favorite!
So, with that, we decided to do the pumpkin patch. But it wouldn’t be complete without our award winning punkin!!!
